Environmental Issues

Environmental Issues are reality - We are the first generation to understand the impact of global climate change and the last generation that can make a difference for the future.

Our family lives in a passive solar home and nearly all of our appliances are energy star rated.  This is a conscious choice in living to do our part to help reduce our carbon footprint.  We recycle as much as we can and bring it to the recycling containers in Hudson. We have progressively changed our light fixtures to CFL bulbs, turn lights off when leaving the room, use surge protectors and turn them off when not in use. I am sure there are many other simple things we do to be responsible environmental citizens but it is so much part of what we do daily, that it is hard to list them individually.

Clean water is one of our biggest environmental challenges. I will work to strengthen our water pollution reduction strategy and ensure that plan has the resources to succeed in our lifetimes.

* If the consensus of 97 percent of scientists is not enough, all we need to do is trust our five senses to know that climate change is real. We are experiencing the volatile weather and other impacts every year. With our leadership in renewable energy, including wind energy, Iowa is in an ideal position to help our country wean itself from our dependency on fossil fuels, which spew carbon pollution into the air. I will work to double down on Iowa’s commitment to energy efficiency and clean energy, including policy support for and investments in solar power, so Iowa can do its part not only to combat climate change,  but also to create new jobs, build our economy and keep our people healthy.

Job Training & Job Growth

Job Training/Job Growth
Iowa needs to prepare our youth for the jobs of the 21st century across the education spectrum of 4 year University degrees, Community College technical programs and apprenticeship programs which are all available in the Cedar Valley.  A prepared and diverse workforce ready for the jobs of the 21st century is necessary to attract businesses. Middle skill level opportunities are growing and offer higher wages that provide families opportunity to continue to live and choose the quality of life that is available in the Cedar Valley.  Forward thinking, visioning and collaboration are needed to continue to move all of Iowa forward in rural & metropolitan areas.

Education Issues

Education is the foundation of opportunity in our country.  As a mother of three and elected school board member, I know our public schools are essential to building a strong middle class and a highly skilled workforce.  We must also make sure higher education is affordable so every student has the opportunity to continue their education after high school.

Iowa has had a great reputation for excellence in education but we need to continue to press forward with a unified vision.  We need to look beyond enrollment and budgets by tapping into our community talent pool during financially challenging times.  I have great confidence that we will prevail by more effectively utilizing our citizen assets and building partnerships to capitalize on available resources. Iowa will become a stronger community that will attract more families to our communities, just as our family was drawn here 15 years ago.

I do not just talk about educational importance, I have been actively involved in all levels of education for years. My background includes over 20 years Teaching, Designing and Directing preschool Physical Activity Programs. Currently the Kindergym Director and  Health Consultant for the Youth Fitness and Obesity Institute both at the University of Northern Iowa.  In addition to, Early Childhood Iowa - Diversity Advisory Committee, Girl Scout Leader for 4 years, Religious Education Leader at St. Mary's Mount Carmel in Eagle Center, IA.

I am 1st in my family to earn a college degree, 1st woman admitted to the Tulane University Athletic Training program.  I have consistently tried to be a role model for my children and other young women, breaking barriers along the way.
